The best time to visit Lake Kivu is during the dry seasons from June to September and January, when sunny skies and warm, calm weather make outdoor activities enjoyable. These months are excellent for swimming, kayaking, boat tours, and photography.

The wet seasons from March to May and September to November bring heavier rains. While the landscape turns green and birdwatching improves, some travel routes may be muddy or delayed.

Lake Kivu is accessible by road from Kigali, taking around 3.5 to 4 hours via Musanze or Muhanga. The scenic drive offers beautiful views and connects easily to both Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest. You can also travel from Gisenyi, Kibuye, or Cyangugu, which sit on the lake’s shore. Local buses and private transfers are available for flexibility. For travellers crossing from Congo, Goma offers border access to Lake Kivu through Gisenyi.
