Meru National Park lies in eastern Kenya, a raw and less-traveled wilderness stretching across 870 square kilometers. It’s one of the most scenic parks in the country, blending wide open grasslands with dense woodlands and swampy riverbanks.
The park’s lifeline is its complex web of 13 rivers and streams, which feed its diverse habitats and support an array of wildlife.
It’s home to elephants, lions, hippos, Grevy’s zebras, and over 400 bird species, making it a quiet paradise for nature lovers.
Meru shares boundaries with Bisanadi and Kora, expanding its wild frontier across eastern Kenya’s landscapes.
Most notably, it’s where Elsa the lioness was raised and released, inspiring one of Africa’s most beloved conservation stories.
Meru’s highlights introduce you to spectacular habitats, rare wildlife, and natural charm in a lesser-known yet wonderfully diverse Kenyan wilderness.
Experience Meru’s wild beauty with game drives, guided walks, birding, and meaningful cultural encounters in untamed settings.
Meru National Park is best visited June to October during the Dry season, when wildlife viewing is easier and animals stay within the park.
Dry Season
The Dry Season runs from June to October. These months bring clear skies, minimal rainfall, and excellent wildlife visibility as animals gather near rivers. June to September sees mild afternoons and crisp mornings, while October can be extremely hot until the first rains bring relief.
Wet Season
The Wet Season spans November to May, divided into short rains (November–December), a dry interlude (January–February), and long rains (March–May). November and April are the wettest, making some roads difficult. However, January and February offer a warmer, greener safari with fewer crowds and dramatic landscapes.
For optimal game viewing and travel ease, the best time to visit Meru National Park is during the dry months from June to early October. However, if you prefer fewer visitors and lusher scenery, January and February also provide excellent conditions with minimal rain.
Meru National Park features a quiet mix of classic lodges and tented bush camps nestled near rivers, forests, and scenic viewpoints. Expect privacy, wildlife access, and eco-conscious comforts throughout.

Most visitors arrive via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and travel by 4WD, often combining Meru with parks like Samburu, Ol Pejeta, or Laikipia. The park is also just an hour’s drive (60km) from Meru town. Though no scheduled flights serve the park directly, charter flights can land at nearby airstrips, offering a convenient option for luxury or time-sensitive travellers.

The guide was absolutely fantastic. Emanuel was present answering questions and not least telling a lot like the animals.
