Nyungwe Forest National Park Wildlife

Nyungwe holds East Africa’s highest concentration of primates.

Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in Rwanda’s southwest, protects one of Africa’s oldest tropical rainforests. This dense, high-altitude forest stretches across mountainous terrain, offering rich biodiversity in both flora and fauna.

The park is renowned for its 13 primate species, including the charismatic chimpanzees and large troops of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys.

Birdwatchers can seek out over 300 bird species, many endemic to the Albertine Rift, while botanists marvel at the park’s orchids, mosses, and ancient trees.

Nyungwe’s network of hiking trails includes the famous Canopy Walkway, suspended 70 meters above ground.

With cool temperatures, frequent mist, and an immersive wilderness setting, Nyungwe offers a peaceful alternative to traditional savannah safaris, perfect for trekkers, nature lovers, and those seeking a slower, deeply enriching encounter with Rwanda’s wild side.

Nyungwe Forest National Park Dry Seasons

Dry Months Recommended

Nyungwe Forest National Park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season from June to September.

During these months, the trails are easier to hike, chimpanzees stay closer to feeding areas, and activities are less likely to be disrupted by heavy rains. This is the ideal period for chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks, with clearer views and more consistent conditions.

From October to May, the forest receives regular rainfall, especially in March and April. While the landscape becomes greener and bird activity increases, trails may be slippery, and hikes more challenging.

Temperatures remain mild throughout the year, with daytime averages around 20°C and cooler nights. No matter when you visit, pack warm layers and waterproof gear, as Nyungwe’s climate stays damp and cool due to altitude.
