Ol Pejeta Wildlife Sanctuary sits on the Laikipia Plateau, north of Mount Kenya. Spanning 90,000 acres, this private conservancy is a powerful example of how tourism supports conservation. It’s the only place in Kenya where you can see the Big Five, rescued chimpanzees, and endangered northern white rhinos in a single day.
Ol Pejeta’s diverse habitats include grasslands, riverine forests, and swamps, home to over 130 black rhinos, 40 white rhinos, thriving lion populations, and over 300 bird species. Beyond game drives, Ol Pejeta offers hands-on conservation activities like lion tracking and behind-the-scenes research experiences.
It’s also home to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Kenya’s only place to see rescued chimpanzees. With strong predator populations, easy access from Nairobi, and fewer crowds, Ol Pejeta is ideal for travelers seeking meaningful, wildlife-rich safaris in a responsibly managed setting.
Explore Ol Pejeta’s highlights, revealing cutting-edge conservation, endangered species, and exceptional wildlife moments within one of Kenya’s finest sanctuaries.
Adventure and conservation blend seamlessly across Ol Pejeta’s wild spaces, offering close encounters with rare species and immersive safari experiences.
The best time to visit Ol Pejeta is June to September or December to February, when dry conditions make wildlife viewing easiest.
Dry Season: June to September
Skies remain clear, and game drives are smooth. Temperatures average around 23°C/73°F in the afternoon but drop to 10°C/50°F at night. It’s the peak wildlife-viewing period with high predator activity and regular sightings of rhinos and big cats.
Wet Season: October to May
October and November bring short rains, while March to May marks the long rains. Wildlife remains visible, but some roads may be challenging. December to February is a dry break and an excellent time for safaris. April can be quite wet but offers lush landscapes.
Lodging in Ol Pejeta blends eco-luxury with conservation. Expect exceptional comfort, scenic views, and guided experiences tailored to ethical and immersive safaris.

Your main gateway to Kenya will be Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), located 15km southeast of Nairobi. From Nairobi, Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies about 210km/130mi northeast—a drive of approximately 3 to 4 hours.
The final 13km/8mi stretch is unpaved, and a 4x4 vehicle is essential during the rainy seasons. Many travellers combine Ol Pejeta with other Laikipia conservancies or extend their safari to Meru National Park for a complete northern Kenya experience.
