Serengeti National Park Migration

Over two million animals
move across the Serengeti’s
open plains.

Serengeti National Park is the ultimate symbol of wild Africa, a land where vast golden plains host Earth’s greatest wildlife spectacle, the Great Migration.

Spanning nearly 15,000 square kilometres, this UNESCO World Heritage Site teems with life, from over 4,000 lions and 1,000 leopards to massive herds of wildebeests, zebras, elephants, and giraffes.

But the Serengeti’s magic isn’t just seasonal. Wildlife thrives here all year round, offering unforgettable sightings of hippos in muddy pools, cheetahs on the hunt, and over 500 species of birds.

Each region adds a new rhythm to the experience—Seronera’s open plains, the Mara River’s dramatic crossings, and the Western Corridor’s hidden surprises.

Whether it’s sunrise balloon safaris, guided game drives, or predator tracking adventures, Serengeti National Park delivers close-up moments with nature in one of the world’s most pristine ecosystems.

Wet Season in Serengeti National Park

Season Safari Guide

The Serengeti can be visited year-round, but each season brings its own charm and rhythm to the landscape. From June to October, the dry season offers clear skies, cool mornings, and fantastic wildlife viewing as animals gather around waterholes.

June to August are especially good for game drives, though chilly mornings require warm layers. September and October are still dry but slightly warmer, with the possibility of short rains by the end of October.

The wet season spans from November to May. November to December brings short rains, which are usually brief afternoon showers and don’t heavily affect safaris. January to February sees a dry spell and is a great time for witnessing calving season in the southern plains.

March to May brings the long rains. It’s quieter with fewer tourists and dramatic green landscapes, perfect for photographers .

Get To
Serengeti

Most travellers begin their Serengeti adventure from Arusha. The fastest route is flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport, located 50 km from Arusha town. From there, you can catch a short flight to one of the park’s airstrips or choose a scenic 8-hour drive through Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Many visitors combine both, driving to experience the Crater and flying out. Flights also operate from Dar es Salaam to Arusha or directly to Serengeti’s remote bush airstrips.
